Doctrine

God is triune. He is the Creator and Father, Son and Spirit. This Trinity of being Father, Son and Holy Ghost is referred to as the Godhead. The Trinity indicates three permanent ways in which God is God; and it indicates the permanent relationship within the Godhead.

The triune nature of God cannot be fully fathomed, understood or explained by the human mind. For the fullness of God is present in each person - the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. But these three persons are always distinct and they are never identical. They are related in that the Father is the begetter of the Son, giving the Son His nature; the Son is begotten of the Father, and the Holy Spirit is sent by and proceeds from the Father and the Son. This relation is permanent and fixed in that the Father is not begotten of and does not proceed from the Son or the Holy Ghost, and the Son does not proceed from the Holy Ghost. Still the three are one.

Their permanent and distinct identity is further established through their work in the universe. The Father sustains and preserves His creation by His power and He rules in the world. The Son, who became incarnate in human flesh, makes intercession for human-kind. The Holy Ghost abides with and within those who belong to the Father, to lead, to guide, to teach, to advocate for, to counsel and to comfort; and He is at work in the world to convict and reprove. Yet their work is never in opposition. There is never conflict between their will and intention. All that is done is mutually known and reinforced between them. Neither person in the Godhead works separately or independently of the other.

God is referred to most often by titles and appellations. The Father is called God Almighty, the Lord Most High, the Lord of Host, the Lord that healeth, that provideth, that giveth peace etc. The titles and appellations refer to His work as creator and preserver of His world. The Son, likewise is referred to repeatedly by His titles. He is called Son of God, Son of Man, Son of David, Messiah, Lord, and Christ. He is further referred to by His human name, Jesus, which means "salvation". When the titles Lord and Christ are combined with the human name Jesus, setting forth - the designation "Lord Jesus Christ" - recognition is given to His deity and humanity. The Holy Ghost is referred to as the Holy Spirit of God, The Spirit of God and the Spirit of Jesus.

In Jesus of Nazareth, whom God made both Lord and Christ, the human and the divine natures were brought together. He was fully God and fully man. In him we see humanity perfected and made at one with divinity. Through the atonement of His life, death and resurrection, the world is reconciled to God.

Following His death and resurrection Jesus ascended to the Father where He was exalted to the right hand of power. He has been given authority over the angels, the principalities and powers; and He is supreme head of the Church. In addition to His intercessory work in behalf of believers, He is bringing the world into subjection and establishing justice in the earth unto Himself; and once all has been subject unto him He will deliver the kingdom to the Father.

God the Creator has made all persons in His image and likeness to know, love, serve, and enjoy Him, both in this world and in the world to come. Man, being in the image of God, is endowed with intelligence, the powers of reason, freedom, volition, emotions, which include the capacity to love and to hate, and the ability to express himself so that he can be understood by others. Mankind is free to choose and to rebel against God. However, such a choice is disobedience or sin, and it meets with God's sternest disapproval and judgment.

The highest expression of human nature is that of perfect obedience to God and conformity to His will. It is seen in Adam prior to His disobedience; and it is demonstrated and perfected in Jesus Christ, who is referred to as the Second Adam. From its loftiest expression, human nature falls to the depth of depravity, referred to as the "lower nature" and is described as works of the flesh. In This fallen condition human beings turn against God and each other. They destroy one another and the world God has given. The entire universe is plunged into a cursed and fallen state as the result of man's sin.

Through the life, suffering, death, resurrection, ascension, exaltation, and intercession of Jesus Christ. God had provided for the redemption and reconciliation of mankind and his world. This comprehensive work of restoration is salvation. It includes justification, forgiveness of sin, adoption, regeneration, sanctification, and transformation of the world order. Through the Spirit, God develops His holiness and righteousness within believers and breaks down the resistance to His will. He has called those who are being sanctified by His Spirit into an elect company which is the Church. The saints who are being sanctified are united mystically in the Church with those who have died in the faith and have been made complete in Jesus Christ.

The visible Church is comprised of living believers who have been baptized by the Holy Spirit into the body of Jesus Christ. Its mission is to glorify and to worship God, to bear witness of Jesus, to teach and to preach the gospel among all nations and to be the body of Christ in the world and His primary agent for the liberation and the salvation of the world. The Church is given life by the Holy Spirit who grants offices to men and women and who gives gifts according to His will.

The normative account of God's revelation is given in the Old and New Testaments. Through this canon the sufficient description of God's activity, His plan of salvation, His expectation for His Church, and promise for His world is given. All claims of revelation, or message, and traditions of men from God must be consistent with Scripture.

The Hope and expectation of the Church is for the imminent return of the Lord Jesus to gather His people unto himself and to judge the world in righteousness. At His return those who have fallen asleep in Him will be caught up with the believers who are alive and who remain to be with the Lord. The devil and his angels, the beast and the false prophet, and whoever is not enrolled in the Book of Life shall be consigned to everlasting punishment in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone. The ultimate hope is for a New Heaven and New Earth wherein Jesus Christ shall reign and where the earth shall be filled with the glory of God.
