In
the early 1950s members
of the Diamond Corner New Testament
Church of God, led by Bro. Elijah Williams
, severed ties with that church, banded together and began
holding open-air meetings both in the neighbourhood and farther
field. A building was later purchased and membership in Light
and Life Apostolic Church was obtained.
In
the early 1960s, ties
with Light and Life Apostolic Church was served when the congregation
voted unanimously to join the Barbados
District of the United Holy Church of America Incorporated.
The
church, affectionately referred to as "the church with
high steps", was renamed Glad
Tidings by the late Bishop Jestina
Gentles.
In
the early 1990s, negotiations
for the purchasing the land on which the church stood began.
In April 1998 the deal
was completed and plans were immediately put into effect for
the construction of a wall building to replace the ageing
wooden structure. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on
Sunday February 21, 1999
and the church was dedicated on Sunday February
18th 2001.
Following
the death of Elder Williams in
August 1978, the Assistant Pastor Sis.
Eunice Griffith took over the pastoral duties until Pastor
Fitzgerald Kirton was appointed Pastor on Sunday,
August 24th 1980. The third pastor was Elder
Franklyn Smith was installed two years later on August
24th, 1982. He served until June 2002 Pastor Glyne
Greaves is currently incharge of the assembly.
